On July 11, 2021, Wembley Stadium was on the brink of a historic win for Gareth Southgate’s football team and an expectant nation. Across England, flags lined the streets; team shirts were worn with pride and anthems were sung and shared as people came together in the belief that football was finally coming home. The young squad had inspired and united the country on their journey to England’s first major final since the 1966 World Cup, and a win against Italy in the European Championship was within their reach.
But as England supporters arrived at Wembley from all corners of the country, scenes of excessive alcohol and drug-fuelled mayhem turned celebration to chaos as ticketless fans stormed the stadium, endangering lives, while on the pitch, missed penalties resulted in a brutal racist backlash.
