How did Annie Börjesson die?

Is the question asked again and again by Annie’s family and friends ever since her body was first discovered on Prestwick beach in Scotland on December 4th 2005. This four-part series for BBC Three and BBC Scotland is the story of the search for an answer.   Quickly labelled a tragic suicide by the authorities, Body On The Beach:  What Happened To Annie? uncovers a far more mysterious and puzzling series of events around her death.

The series follows a young journalist – Hazel Martin – who has become fascinated by Annie’s story.  Hearing from friends and family, a range of experts and the police who first worked on the case, Hazel launches her own in-depth investigation into what really happened.  Along the way she pieces together the strange events leading up to Annie’s death; reveals disturbing differences in the forensic analysis; comes up against a wall of secrecy and classified state secrets when dealing with the authorities; and pieces together the truth about a possible suspect.

At a time when – more than ever – we are aware of how the vulnerability of young women can be overlooked, this is a story with powerful echoes today.  Countless bloggers and internet sleuths  – mostly young women themselves – have been moved by the tragedy of Annie, and are keen to know what happened to her.    Now, after many months of research, Hazel and her team have uncovered new evidence about her mysterious death and tell the most comprehensive story yet about what happened to Annie Borgesson.
